Could someone be so kind as to post this over at Rennlist? I no longer keep that account active (re: pay) so I don't have classified posting privileges.

New Toy C3 in forum Showroom
Looking good. I picked up my '80 last year. I picked it up since it was a 4-speed. I've always liked the C3s.

I disagree Dan. 80s kids (born in the 70s) got their drivers licenses in the 80s and drove 80s cars (and wanted 80s cars) in high school. That is why 80s cars are beginning to gain more value. The other cars that are gaining are the restomods. They like the look of classic muscle but want them to drive and be reliable like modern cars. The cars that aren't gaining in value are the OE restored classic cars....unless they are something special. (BTW...I was transported directly back to HS when I got behind the wheel of the Saleen. Not that I had a Saleen in HS, but I did have a fox body when I graduated in 1990)

The late 90s kids are are the ones who scare me......they are the "Fast and Furious" kids and will want Japanese cars with tiny 4 cyl engines, big boosters and N2O! ("My car has both nitrous AND NOS".....says late 90s kid who walks into shop)

Well, ended up getting rid of the 66 and also picked up a stock Saleen.. The 66 was a very nice car, but I just wanted another Fox/Saleen. If my 66 hadn't have been a factory GT then I probably would have restomodded it, but since it was a special car, I rebuild the suspension (and pretty much everything) back to factory original....which meant 50 year old suspension technology based off of the Falcon!

I'm seeing a trend in the industry and the cars that are gaining value now are the 80s cars since Gen X is getting to that point in their lives where they can afford to have toys. (shut up Dan, you're atypical!) I think in 5-10 years the special Fox's (Cobras, Saleens, McLarens, etc) will fetch more than OEM restored 1st gen Mustangs. Heck fox bodies have increased in value 50% in the last two years (Sept '12-Aug '14).....the clean ones will fetch decent money. The problem is most of them have been modded to heck and back.

Also, think of this.....

Between 1965-1970 Shelby built 13,074 Shelby Mustangs (not including racecars or KR models) and look at their value now. Between 1984-1993 Saleen built 2703 Saleen Mustangs. Not saying that the Saleen will be as valuable as a Shelby, but it wasn't very long ago that Shelby's were just another Mustang on the street and could be had for $10-15K.

Here is a different breakdown of the numbers...

Between 1965-1970 - 6 YEARS Ford produced 2,447,095 Mustangs....roughly 0.5% (one half of one percent) were Shelby Mustangs. Between 1984-1993 - 10 YEARS Ford produced 1,533,991 Mustangs....roughly 0.2% (two tenths of one percent) were Saleen Mustangs.

Anyway...enough number crunching....here's a quick photo I shot in the driveway this evening.....

So after all the fuss and whatnot and finishing this car, I think I going to get rid of it and get a Fox Body Saleen. I've just wanted another one for a while and I'd probably drive it more than I do the 66. I did the 66 too well and now don't like to leave it anywhere for fear of scratching the paint or something. I want more of a driver than the 66 turned out to be.

Well, been slow going as this is our busy time of year and I can't justify working on "my own stuff" when there is a shop full of work to be done!

However, my son has been inventorying and getting his car ready to work on. He found that the doors needed to be replaced and there were some other parts that buying a second parts car would be beneficial. We went down to Knoxville to pick up a '76 as a parts car for this one.

It has ended up being a much more solid car.....but I figured it would be being a southern car.

So it looks like we will be building the '76 Cobra instead. As an added bonus, it is in the color scheme he wants (although it will need paint).

This is the look that he is going for.......just without the rocker stripes or snake decal

Alright.....starting yet another personal project (okay, my son's project).

My oldest son really, really (really) likes the Mustang II. Go figure. I actually don't mind the car, when it has the Cobra aesthetic package.

So, my oldest son is about to turn 14. He got his first car about a month ago. It is a 1978 Mustang II 2+2, V8 car with AC, but it is a project.

He and I will build this car over the next two years in anticipation of him starting to drive. (actually we'll build it over the next 18 months, I want him to learn to drive on his own car).

Now, people have asked me about allowing a 16 year old to drive a rear-drive V8 car. My response is this, #1) he will be building this car putting in his own time and labor, #2) while I supplied the project, it is up to him to provide the parts he needs (well, I'll take up to about $3K from him), and #3) he will be the only person in the area daily driving a restored Mustang II (with Cobra package), the more he drives it, the more people will notice and know who's car it is. So if he gets out there acting like a jackwagon......I will be the first person they call. He knows this!

So, here is his project.....he is going to paint it black with gold Le Mans stripes (but he doesn't want to put the Cobra side stripes on the car). The entire car is here (in the hatch, on the shelves, etc, but the car is complete).....so you have to see the car for what it CAN BE not what it CURRENTLY IS...

So while it is a V8 car, I am going to limit him to 200bhp. The car came with a rebuilt 289 with 10:5 compression pistons, etc. Basically a 289 built up like a K-code (270bhp, probably more with modern components) but he isn't getting that engine. It is already an autotragic, he can learn to drive manual on the Vette.

I also wanted to give him the reliability of a modern fuel injection power plant. So what I've done is gone out and purchased a donor car, a 1993 Thunderbird with 5.0HO and AOD. It is a great running car that had been rearended and I got for a song. So from it I will pull the 200hp 302HO, wiring harness, computer, and AOD. The mustang currently has a 2.79 rear end, and I will probably put a 3.25 or 3.55 in it, not quite sure yet. I want him to have respectable pull off of the line, but don't want him trying to film amateur "Pinks All Out" episodes. Although I don't think even 3.55 would be too much with 200hp even in that light car.

Here is the donor car I picked up

Now.....I'm also looking for MY next personal project too. I'm quasi-in-the-market for a 1965ish Volvo P1800. So keep your eyes open.
