Mark the most basic advice I can give is to use the clone tool with varying opacity.... that will let you "erase" objects from the image and create a realistic background to replace them with. Use it at 100% to directly copy part of the image, then lower to about 50% to blur it so that it doesn't appear exactly the same
Thanks Bill Palmer I believe there is something you can download which changes GIMP's layout to look like Photoshop. I don't remember what it's called but just search google and you'll find it. might make it easier to get used to...

? There was no HDR. NO color / lighting / contrast editing period. The originals I posted are exactly as they came out of my camera (except scaled down)
