All I told you is for Ohio. Also, before you can get the title transfered you have to take the car ( out of state purchase) to a dealer for a VIN inspection, they have a form to fill out to verify the vin on the car matches the title you were given.

Indiana you have to go to a police station and have the VIN check done and signed off on. This is only for cars that have an out of state title.

Thanks guys

So it seems like this is what I have to do:
1- go to Michigan, hand over the cash, get the title from them in the presence of a notary
2- leave the car in Michigan, go to Ohio, get the new title in my name and pay sales tax and register plates.
3- get insurance
4- go back to Michigan, this time drive the car back to Ohio and get it inspected

Seems like an awful lot of driving and I wouldn't to pay them and leave the car with them, title or no title.
OR. In step 1, can I get temporary plates from the Michigan BMV, and drive the car to Indy?

I'm pretty sure you're going to need proof of insurance in order to register the vehicle and get a plate. If it were me, I would just get the auto insurance first and get that out of the way. Your insurance agent can provide you with proof of insurance. Also, you can just go to the title holder's bank to get the title notarized, that's what I did last time I paid cash for a car out of state.

Actually they can do that at the BMV now, but you have to take the car with you when you register it. They just step outside, check the VIN and resume their paperwork.

A little correction...

1- Go to Michigan and hand over the cash, take the signed title and the car with you back to?? Ohio maybe? Have insurance before you purchase the car.
2- Take car to the DMV/BMV of the state you are going to register it in.
3- Register car, apply for title, pay tax and tag (make sure you have proof of insurance with you)
4- (when everything checks while you are sitting there) DMV gives you a license plate for the car, current tag for license plate and mails you your title in about 6 weeks.

Took me about 20 minutes at the Elkhart downtown branch when I registered the NSX, it had a Utah title. What took so long....me digging to find my DD-214 for Veteran Plates.....it was buried in my paperwork when I got there and took me a few minutes to find it in my military jacket (personnel folder).

I wouldn't get insurance before you buy the car, because if it isn't what you expected your stuck with insurance on a car you didn't buy and you might have to pay the cancellation fee or whatever if you cancel the insurance even though you never bought the car

If it is a dealer they will not sell you the car without proof of insurance, MI or IN. I was under the presumption that he was prepared to buy, not just going to look.

siiiiiike I was assuming he did have insurance on a vehicle, but as long as your insured someway on any vehicle you can buy another one, but to get that specific car you have 72 hours afterwards to get that specific vehicle added to the policy, it doesn't have to be on there before purchase. I've never gotten insurance on a car before I bought it because I've had a lot of flakers on buys before. Or dealerships changing what we had agree'd on price wise
